Taking the UAG knowledge test

What you need before, during, and after the FAA Unmanned Aircraft General – Small test. Requirements change, so confirm with the sources below before you schedule.

Recent changes

  • Starting October 26, 2026, some questions include images from current charts that are not in the printed testing supplement.

Before the test

Minimum age
You must be at least 14 to take the UAG test.
Authorization
No endorsement or school certificate is needed. Bring an acceptable photo ID.
Registration
Get an FAA Tracking Number (FTN) by creating a profile in IACRA, then schedule with PSI, the FAA's testing vendor, online or by phone at 844-704-1487. Cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours ahead, and arrive about 15 minutes early.
Cost
PSI charges $175 per knowledge test, plus tax where it applies.

On test day

Format
60 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours (120 minutes). You need 70% to pass.
Bring
A current government-issued photo ID that shows your date of birth, signature, and physical residential address (a P.O. box doesn't count). Applicants under 18 without an acceptable ID need a parent or guardian to attest to their identity.
Provided
The test center provides the testing supplement, scratch paper, and a pen, and the test software has a built-in calculator. You may bring an E6B, plotter, or a basic or aviation calculator if you clear its memory in front of the proctor, though the center can refuse any personal calculator.

After the test

Results
You get your printed Airman Knowledge Test Report (AKTR) at the test center as soon as you finish. It shows your score and a code for each knowledge area you missed.
Validity
Passing keeps you current for 24 calendar months. To keep flying under Part 107 after that, complete the FAA's free online recurrent training (ALC-677) every 24 calendar months; there is no recurrent knowledge test.
If you fail
Wait 14 calendar days before retesting. No endorsement is needed.
Higher score
You can retake a passed test to improve your score after 30 days; the most recent score is the one that counts.
Next step
Apply for your remote pilot certificate (FAA Form 8710-13) in IACRA; test results can take up to 48 hours to appear there. There is no practical test. You must be at least 16 to hold the certificate.

Sample UAG practice questions

Written by AI from FAA source material for specific ACS elements, in the FAA’s three-choice format. Reported questions are removed.

  1. 1. A remote pilot wants to fly a small unmanned aircraft over people as a Category 1 operation. The aircraft weighs 0.50 pound by itself, and the pilot attaches an accessory camera that weighs 0.10 pound. The aircraft has no exposed rotating parts that would lacerate human skin. Does the aircraft meet the Category 1 weight limit?

    UA.I.A.K1
    1. A. Yes, because only the weight of the aircraft itself counts, and 0.50 pound is under the limit.
    2. B. Yes, because the absence of exposed rotating parts that would lacerate skin removes the weight limit.
    3. C. No, because the weight limit includes everything on board or attached at takeoff and throughout the operation, and 0.60 pound exceeds 0.55 pound.
    Show answer

    C. The third choice is correct. Category 1 is limited to a maximum weight of 0.55 pound, including everything on board or otherwise attached to the aircraft at the time of takeoff and throughout each operation. The total here is 0.60 pound, which is over the limit [2]. The first choice is wrong because accessories count toward the weight [2]. The second choice is wrong because the rotating-parts condition is an additional requirement, not a replacement for the weight limit [2].

  2. 2. A U.S.-registered small unmanned aircraft is owned and operated by a person who is neither a U.S. citizen nor a permanent resident. The person plans to use it for commercial air operations in the United States. Which statement is correct?

    UA.I.A.K1
    1. A. The aircraft is treated as a U.S. civil aircraft because it is U.S.-registered, so no additional authorization is required.
    2. B. The aircraft is considered foreign civil aircraft, so the operator needs a Foreign Aircraft Permit under 14 CFR part 375 before conducting commercial air operations.
    3. C. The aircraft is exempt from registration because the owner is not a U.S. citizen.
    Show answer

    B. The correct choice is the second. Foreign civil aircraft includes a U.S.-registered aircraft that is owned, controlled, or operated by persons who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States. The operator of such an aircraft needs a Foreign Aircraft Permit under 14 CFR part 375 before conducting commercial air operations [3]. The first choice is wrong because U.S. registration alone does not keep the aircraft from being classed as foreign civil aircraft when the owner or operator is not a citizen or permanent resident [3]. The third choice is wrong because foreign-owned and operated small UAS must still be registered under part 47 or part 48 [3].

  3. 3. A research organization plans to fly an unmanned aircraft without remote identification solely to gather data for aeronautical research. Under 14 CFR part 89, who may authorize this operation without remote identification?

    UA.I.F.K3
    1. A. The Administrator
    2. B. The manufacturer of the unmanned aircraft
    3. C. The local air traffic control facility
    Show answer

    A. Correct: 14 CFR § 89.120 says the Administrator may authorize operations without remote identification where the operation is solely for aeronautical research or to show compliance with regulations [1]. The manufacturer and the local ATC facility are not named as having this authority in the excerpt, so those choices are wrong [1].
